During the last ILTM event in Shanghai, I had the chance to discover and stay at the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong, one of the most beautiful hotels in the city. Opened in 2010 for the Shanghai World Expo, the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai enjoys an ideal location at the heart of the city, offering an exceptional panorama. The property sits within Shanghai's International Financial Centre, made up of a shopping mall and two skyscrapers. The Ritz-Carlton occupies the eighteen upper floors of the South Tower, which rises 260 metres. This five-star hotel counts 285 rooms in an Art Deco style. It also features the highest rooftop bar in China, a five-star spa recognised by the prestigious Forbes guide, and four restaurants with varied inspirations, including one awarded a star in the 2017 Michelin Guide Shanghai. The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai therefore has major assets to satisfy both business travellers and tourists. What sets the property apart, above all, is its welcome reserved for families.
A unique experience designed for families
The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai pays particular attention to its youngest guests, offering all kinds of activities within the hotel. The opening of Disneyland in 2016, east of Shanghai in the Pudong district, the very district where the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai is located, encouraged the hotel to create an offer dedicated to families. For one or several nights, families can enjoy a special package called 'Magical Family Moments', which includes a night's stay along with a set of activities and amenities designed for the youngest guests.
This set of activities for children is called the 'Ritz Kids Programme'. Everything starts at reception, where children can immediately sit down at a small table to play while their parents check in: a thoughtful touch, since it frees parents' minds to talk with the front desk staff. The hotel offers children sweet and savoury treats as soon as they arrive. They are then invited to take part in the 'junior hotelier' programme, a unique scheme that lets young guests accompany hotel staff to discover their world. For this, each child receives a tailor-made version of the hotel uniform with their name on it. This educational experience lets children learn the secrets of the Ritz-Carlton art of welcoming and promises to be unforgettable. The hotel takes care of the children's happiness right through the evening, with a night safari on offer too. In their room, children get to enjoy the camping experience in full comfort: their own tent to sleep in, equipped with a camping lamp and a compass to truly immerse them in the adventure. They will also find a stuffed animal to keep them company through the night. To end the evening beautifully, the Ritz-Carlton offers younger guests a bedtime story, accompanied by cookies and milk.
The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai has therefore put together an intense programme to delight children, and parents are not left out either, as they also benefit from numerous perks. The hotel offers exclusive privileges in the shops of the neighbouring mall, as well as a tea break at the Club Lounge, where parents can enjoy champagne, wines and pastries at their leisure. Families are thus guaranteed a successful stay at this hotel, which also offers a unique setting and unique services.
Contemporary luxury with a 360-degree view of Shanghai
The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong, is the group's second hotel to open in the city. Thanks to its location within the city's International Financial Centre, it enjoys a unique panorama and architecture. The complex, designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli, is largely glazed, offering exceptional views over Shanghai and its landmarks, such as the Oriental Pearl Tower, from the rooms and public areas. The interior design of this recent hotel was created by Richard Farnell. It is contemporary, inspired by 1930s Shanghai Art Deco style, and fits perfectly with the Ritz-Carlton's surroundings, since the hotel enjoys a stunning view of the Bund, the city's boulevard of historic buildings that forms the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world. The At Flair bar, which I discovered during my stay, offers an incredible view of the Pearl Tower and serves a wide range of dishes and cocktails in a friendly, festive atmosphere. The menu features Japanese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Indian and Chinese tapas: the very best of Asia.
Finally, the Ritz-Carlton's services are second to none. The most iconic is the spa, the only one in China recognised by the prestigious Forbes guide. Located on the 55th floor of the hotel, the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai spa comprises 10 treatment rooms, all lined with floor-to-ceiling windows offering a spectacular view of the city. In this Art Deco space, the Ritz-Carlton offers a unique spa experience. Chinese, Indian, European and Balinese cultures and influences are combined to offer the best possible treatments, using products that are all natural and organic, drawn from plants, essential oils and marine ingredients.
