Hospitality and craftsmanship of excellence share the same culture of detail, mastery and transmission. At a time when companies with the Entreprises du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label are seeking to strengthen their customer relations, inspiration from the luxury hotel sector opens up new perspectives.
In a world where customer expectations are constantly evolving, hospitality is no longer simply a service: it has become an experience, an art of bonding, a way of making the moment unforgettable. The link between high-end hotels and arts and crafts is not only natural, but essential. Basically, it’s a question of combining two forms of know-how: that of the welcoming gesture, and that of the creative gesture.

Mutual inspiration between two worlds of excellence
Artisanal excellence, like prestige hospitality, shares fundamental values: the quest for perfect detail, the mastery of time, the transmission of gestures, and above all, the attention paid to others. In a workshop as in a palace, it’s this attention that makes all the difference. Artisans create objects with the intention of touching and conveying an emotion; hoteliers, on the other hand, orchestrate a multitude of gestures to create a harmonious welcome that goes beyond mere functionality.
This parallel can be found in EPV-labeled houses, heirs to ancestral know-how, and in grand hotels such as Le Meurice, in Paris, which for over 180 years has seen horse-drawn carriages and limousines, while perpetuating a tradition of excellence in service. These places are the guardians of a living heritage, in the full sense of the word: a heritage on the move, capable of adapting and reinventing itself, while remaining faithful to its roots.
Customer relations nurtured by a sense of hospitality
If artisans can draw inspiration from the hotel industry, it’s also to strengthen their own customer relations. The meaning of hospitality brings an enriched reading of this relationship: welcoming a customer into a workshop or store is much more than just selling an object. It’s about creating an experience – a human encounter, a story, a memory.
Where certain art trades have sometimes closed in on themselves, the example of the luxury hotel industry shows the importance oflistening, anticipating and personalizing the welcome. EPV craftsmen who integrate this dimension into their approach can not only build customer loyalty, but also reinforce the perceived value of their work.
The Manufacture de Sèvres, a model of transmission and reinvention
Take the emblematic example of the Manufacture de Sèvres, founded in the 18th century and once supplying Louis XV and Louis XVI with tableware and decorative objects. Even today, its craftsmen perpetuate the techniques of modeling, enameling and hand-decorating with exceptional rigor. But they don’t live in a museum: they create contemporary pieces, collaborate with today’s designers, and export all over the world. The Élysée Palace continues to call on us for its state receptions.
This ability to reconcile tradition and modernity is a precious asset for French craftsmanship. And this is where the hotel industry can play a catalytic role.
Hotels as living showcases of French know-how
Yesterday, the châteaux of the absolute monarchy showcased French refinement. Today, this role has been partly taken over by prestige hotels: open, visible places frequented by international clientele in search of authenticity, refinement and cultural experience.
Some hotels are already playing the role of “flagship” for French arts and crafts, by incorporating pieces signed by exceptional manufacturers into their décor or amenities: Sèvres crockery, Saint-Louis crystalware, Garnier-Thiebaut linens, bespoke furniture or contemporary works of art. Others go even further, organizing collaborations between chefs, artisans, designers and hoteliers, to create new forms of hospitality. These partnerships enable artisans to promote their work beyond traditional circles, and hotels to offer their guests a unique experience.

Haute Literie know-how in the hotel industry is essential, and Dumas Paris, which has been awarded the Entreprises du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label for 5 generations, is a prime example of this.
Building tomorrow’s hospitality together
To take this a step further, it is essential to build bridges between EPV craftsmen and hospitality professionals. Because the challenges are the same: how to pass on know-how to the younger generations? How do you integrate technological innovations without losing the soul of the business? How can we meet today’s expectations while maintaining a rare level of quality?
The world is changing. Uses are changing. But the quest for meaning remains. And in this quest, craftsmen and hoteliers have everything to gain by joining forces. One through materials, the other through experience; one through gesture, the other through presence; both through the pursuit of excellence and human connection.
This cross-fertilization must also be supported, encouraged and enhanced. The EPV label plays a central role here: by bringing together exceptional companies, it provides a platform for dialogue between professions, sharing best practices, and creating a common culture of transmission and innovation.
Hospitality beyond the walls
Basically, hospitality is not limited to a particular place. It’s a state of mind, an art of receiving, a gesture of generosity. It can be expressed in a hotel lobby, a craftsman’s salon, a centuries-old factory or a contemporary boutique.
What we have to build together – artisans, hoteliers, designers, trainers and ambassadors of living heritage – is 21st-century hospitality: human, rooted and evolving. Hospitality capable of raising France’s profile on the international stage, while cultivating what is most precious to us: our gestures, our traditions, our ability to welcome, to pass on, to move.
