I had the opportunity to visit the Rosewood Mayakoba<\/strong>, in the heart of the Riviera Maya, t to discover not only the exceptionality of the place – its lagoons, its suites, its harmonious architecture – but above all the spa “Sense, A Rosewood Spa”.<\/p>\n\n

I was welcomed with rare kindness, by teams who were attentive, passionate and deeply committed to the philosophy of hospitality. It was also here that I had a unique sensory and spiritual experience: that of traditional Mayan healing, steeped in history, ritual and symbolism. Every look, every word, every gesture seemed to be part of a genuine form of hospitality, one that links visitors to the history of a place and to the memory of those who have inhabited it.<\/p>\n\n

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the men and women who embody this philosophy, and to share what I’ve experienced: a journey to the heart of Mayan traditions, through an ancestral ritual whose depth has left a lasting impression on me.<\/p>\n

An island sanctuary dedicated to regeneration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Built on its own island in the middle of the lagoons, the spa is an invitation to a complete change of scenery. Access is via a wooden bridge, as a symbolic transition between the ordinary world and a space of inner reconnection. The architecture, inspired by nature, favors raw materials: light-colored stone, wood and local fibers. Everything seems designed to stop time with the surrounding jungle. <\/p>\n\n

Inside, around 1,600 m\u00b2 – are dedicated to well-being: twelve treatment rooms, eight wellness suites, therapeutic baths, steam grottoes, saunas, sensory showers and a vast relaxation area open onto water and vegetation.The fitness center<\/strong>, perfectly integrated into the complex, helps to wake up the body before treatments: cardio machines, stretching zones, personalized programs and friendly staff. Outside, a swimming pool surrounded by mangroves, a meditation platform and a medicinal garden extend this atmosphere of balance and rejuvenation.<\/p>\n\n

This place is not simply a place to relax; it acts as an inner refuge, a bridge between the material world and the spiritual dimension of existence.<\/p>\n\n

Hospitality as a guiding principle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

What struck me as soon as I arrived was the way in which hospitality<\/strong> is manifested in every detail: the slowness of gesture, the quality of silence, the accuracy of speech. The teams don’t just welcome, they guide. Their presence doesn’t invade; it accompanies. This form of hospitality is rooted in a deeply respectful philosophy of living beings: that of the Mayans<\/strong>, for whom well-being was not limited to the body, but extended to the relationship between earth, water, fire, air and the human being.<\/p>\n\n

Each spa treatment is inspired by this cosmovision: it links the physical body, vital energy and surrounding nature, to restore harmony.<\/p>\n

The Kuxtal Garden – The garden of life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

At the heart of the spa is the Kuxtal Garden<\/strong>, whose name means “life” in the Mayan language. This sensory garden is both a botanical and a spiritual creation: a place of passage, an alchemical act, a preparation for any healing experience.<\/p>\n\n

I went in with a therapist. The air was fragrant with sage and copal, two plants sacred in pre-Hispanic tradition. Before anything else, I was offered a purification ritual: sage fumes enveloped my body, inviting me to release tension and cumbersome thoughts. This apparently simple step had symbolic power: to purify oneself before receiving. This rite of cleansing through smoke, found in many traditions including in Europe, re-establishes the link between self and nature, dissolving invisible tensions.<\/p>\n

The Mayan treatment I experienced was a total immersion in the essence of ancestral well-being. The path continues through squares of aromatic plants, shrubs and medicinal flowers. The therapist explained that each section of the garden corresponds to one of the four cardinal points<\/strong> – North, South, East and West – and to a dimension of being: body, mind, heart and soul.<\/p>\n\n

The trail is a meditation in motion: touch the leaves, smell the fragrances, listen to the water, observe the play of light. Each plant has its own symbolism: healing, protection, regeneration or clarity. This walk led me to choose, intuitively, three plants according to my needs at the time: soothing, opening, energizing. These plants, in the form of essential oils, were then integrated into the treatment ritual. <\/p>\n

The Mayan healing ritual – Alchemy between body and nature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The treatment took place in a cabin open to the vegetation. The light filtered through the foliage drew moving shadows on the ground, as if to recall the breathing of the place. The therapist began with a purifying foot massage, a symbol of anchoring. Then he applied to the skin a mixture of extracts from plants chosen from the Kuxtal Garden. This contact with the earth, combined with the scent of plants, created a feeling of unity between body and environment.<\/p>\n\n

The session alternated between gentle effleurage and deep pressure, guided by an almost musical rhythm. Each gesture seemed to correspond to a breath, a wave, a silent prayer.<\/p>\n\n

At the end, I was offered an herbal tea made from flowers and honey, extending the ritual with a gesture of hospitality, a return to gentleness.<\/p>\n\n

More than a massage, this treatment is an inner journey, a reconnection with the elements. The Mayans saw the body as a channel between earth and sky; I felt this principle manifesting itself in every gesture, with respect for silence and breath. It was a profoundly humanist experience, where nature becomes a mirror of the soul. When I came out, I felt I’d lightened not only my muscles, but also my mind.<\/p>\n\n

The chocolate ceremony – Encounter with the shaman<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another highlight of the trip was taking part in a chocolate seed ceremony<\/strong> led by a Mayan shaman<\/strong>. This ceremony, inherited from a thousand-year-old tradition, involves entering a sacred space of connection.<\/p>\n\n

Called “food of the gods” by pre-Columbian civilizations, cocoa was used as an offering during spiritual rituals. It symbolizes the heart: warmth, compassion, openness to self and others.<\/p>\n\n

The ceremony took place in the morning, in a circular space at the heart of the garden and beside a water feature. The shaman lit a copal fire, and the participants sat in a circle. The shaman began by fumigating each participant with copal resin and aromatic plants, an ancient gesture designed to energetically cleanse the space and bodies present – a practice widely documented in Mesoamerican traditions as an act of opening and purification. <\/p>\n\n

The shaman’s breath in a conch shell (marine conch shell) pierced the silence like an invocation: this low-pitched sound acts as a call to the spiritual world and marks the start of a shamanic sequence punctuated by chanting and percussion. Conches are traditionally used to announce the sacred and connect participants to the breath of ritual.<\/p>\n\n

Before receiving the cocoa seeds, everyone was invited to express an intention: gratitude, healing, liberation or renewal. The shaman then invokes the protective spirits to seal our deepest intentions.<\/p>\n\n

The whispered songs, carried by the percussion, served as a common thread, allowing the emotions to unfold in safety. The combination of fumigation, conch blowing and chanting transformed the space into a “living place”: a place of memory, offering and healing. True to the Mayan spirit, this ceremony was more about inner resonance than mere gustatory pleasure, producing a lasting effect on the body and the mind. Gradually, our hearts opened up, our emotions were released, and a sense of unity settled over the group.<\/p>\n\n

This ceremony, both simple and powerful, was a reminder that well-being lies not only in the body, but also in connection: connection to oneself, connection to others, connection to the earth.She was the perfect embodiment of what I call inner hospitality<\/strong>: welcoming emotions, welcoming life as it is.<\/p>\n\n

An inspiring model of hospitality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The experience left a deep impression on me. Beyond the refinement of the premises and the impeccable quality of the treatments, this spa enabled me to experience a true reconnection with nature and myself. The Mayan ritual, the cocoa ceremony, the contact with the plants, the slow gestures and the benevolent presence of the teams formed a coherent, almost initiatory whole. In this context, hospitality takes on an inner dimension: it is no longer simply the art of welcoming others, but also that of welcoming oneself, of making oneself available to what is being experienced and transformed. In Mayan culture, the balance between the visible and the invisible is essential; this spa translates this into action, through the gentleness, slowness and depth of its approach.<\/p>\n\n

This hospitality goes beyond mere attention to the guest: it becomes a philosophy of life. She reminds us that receiving is also about listening, understanding and honoring the other person.<\/p>\n\n

For me, this spa embodies an inspiring form of hospitality: one that links body care with self-knowledge, material comfort with spiritual depth. In this respect, Sense, A Rosewood Spa<\/em> goes far beyond wellness; it creates a space where local culture, nature and intimacy meet. This type of experience, still sometimes taboo or marginal in Europe, is expressed here with simplicity and clarity.<\/p>\n\n

It would be precious if more spas and hotels allowed themselves to explore this path, that of wellness rooted in local culture, land and traditions. Through its Sense<\/em> of Place philosophy, the Rosewood Group demonstrates that a hotel can combine luxury and authenticity, modernity and heritage, personal experience and cultural roots. <\/p>\n\n

This experience inspired me to reflect on our own traditions. France, like Mexico, has a wealth of plants, rituals and symbols linked to nature. Certain purification and healing practices – once deeply rooted in the countryside or in monasteries – have faded over time.Rediscovering this link, reinventing contemporary rituals based on our own plant heritage, would be an exciting way to revive a hospitality of body and spirit. A simple workshop, a moment of sharing around local plants, could recreate the connection that the Mayans have managed to preserve. My experience at Mayakoba taught me that true well-being comes from meaning<\/strong>: the meaning of gestures, the meaning of plants, the meaning of place.<\/p>\n\n

It’s a real source of inspiration for rethinking hospitality today: hospitality that uplifts as much as it soothes, that connects the visible and the invisible, and that reminds us that care always begins with attention to what surrounds us.<\/p>\n\n

In conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

To stay at Rosewood Mayakoba is to enter an aesthetic of calm, light, water and harmony. But to dive into “Sense, A Rosewood Spa” – is to cross the boundary between outer luxury and inner quest. It’s a place of inner elevation.<\/p>\n\n

Through the beauty of its surroundings, the richness of its rituals and the sincerity of those who work there, this spa embodies a vision of hospitality deeply rooted in Mayan wisdom.<\/p>\n\n

I feel I’ve touched on a broader vision: that well-being is not just physical, but relational – between oneself, nature and time. I felt Mayan culture – not as an ornament, but as a background vibration – whispering to me: “listen, slow down, find your deep breath”. I felt the presence of a culture that honors nature, time and the human heart. This experience reminded me that hospitality is not a gesture, but a state of mind: one that connects, listens and uplifts.<\/p>\n\n

I recommend this place to anyone looking for more than a luxury interlude: a gentle quest for self, in the calm of the waters, the breath of the forest, and the heritage of an ancient civilization that knew that balance also dwells in silence.<\/p>\n
