Today I\u2019d like to present you with the concept for Suite 305, which has been\u00a0developed under the care of Hicham Lahlou.<\/p>\n
I am very grateful to Hicham Lahlou, who was gracious enough to provide some\u00a0thoughtful answers to a few questions.<\/p>\n
Over the course of the centuries, France\u2014with its rich history, traditions,\u00a0and taste for magnificence\u2014has developed an architectural expertise\u00a0within hotels that has allowed it to cultivate its art of welcoming. What is\u00a0your own definition or view of this French art of welcoming? What\u00a0characterizes it? What influences do you bring to it?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
France is home to a history that is very rich and marked by a quest for\u00a0aestheticism and refinement, such that it has permeated through every possible\u00a0piece of our national heritage. From woven works to marquetry, brassware,\u00a0glassworks, cutlery, and porcelain ware, the domains of excellence remain\u00a0numerous and have allowed us to fashion an entire range of not only exceptional\u00a0sites, but also careers. Coming down to us as a legacy from the era of the\u00a0French monarchy, sumptuous receptions have remained a French tradition of\u00a0global renown. Splendor and etiquette were indispensable features during the\u00a0time of power, and they remain very much a tradition that, from a certain point of\u00a0view, has left its mark. Hospitality is, after all, an art. Beyond the customs of\u00a0service and welcome, which must be up to impeccable standards, French hotels\u00a0are reputed for their expertise, tableware, gastronomy, tradition of reception, their\u00a0elegance\u2026<\/p>\n
As an intermediary between two cultures, French and Moroccan, I am strongly\u00a0influenced by the history and cultural wealth of my two countries. What France\u00a0and Morocco share in common are the art of living, the taste for finer things, and\u00a0excellence in the art of welcoming. These arts express themselves in different\u00a0ways, but they represent a true culture of refinement and remain a marvelous\u00a0source of inspiration.<\/p>\n\u00a0A Moroccan nod to the pastries\u00a0for Mazagan Beach Resort<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

What is your vision of the hotel room? How do you hope to reinvent it?\u00a0What is your conception of the division of the various spaces in a room?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n
First off, it must be comfortable, sound-proof, feature quality bedding,\u00a0demonstrate high quality of materials, furniture, textures, with enough space to\u00a0walk around, equipped with cutting-edge technology, featuring the essential\u00a0commodities, a bathroom furnished with quality products\u2026<\/p>\n
From there, I think a hotel room should be able to offer a bit of imagination, an\u00a0ambiance different from one\u2019s own home, with codes that wander a bit from the\u00a0quotidian. Staying in a hotel room means living in a space for a relatively short\u00a0period of time. One has to be able to feel good, to find the essentials but also a\u00a0bit of inspiration for embarking on a voyage into the imaginary. The d\u00e9cor and the\u00a0layout serve, in this respect, as essential keys into the proposed experience.<\/p>\nMaymana Concept Stores, another work from Hicham Lahlou\u2019s\u00a0portfolio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Can you describe for us the plan for the Suite 305 project that you will be\u00a0exhibiting at the EQUIP\u2019HOTEL\u00a0Salon?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
The suite that I\u2019ve come up with falls under the theme of African inspired works.<\/p>\n
The design of this suite allows us to enter an eclectic universe. The concept\u00a0rests on a duality of ambiances, a visual contrast that plays with graphical and\u00a0architectural codes, drawing their source from a multiplicity of African\u00a0inspirations, all the way from deep Africa to Maghreb.<\/p>\n
One enters the suite and stumbles straight away upon a universe that is\u00a0fascinating and energizing: a graphics-heavy motif inspired by African art as well\u00a0as by the Berber and Arab-Andalusian spirit.<\/p>\n
At the heart of this colored universe, one discovers an unexpected structure\u00a0entirely sculpted of immaculate white. This forms a night\/sleeping corner\u00a0structured by partitions and a ceiling, in which one penetrates to coil deep inside.\u00a0It\u2019s a kind of \u201croom within a room,\u201d a microcosm in a macro universe. Once\u00a0inside, the client is enveloped in a sculptural cocoon that lies barely open onto\u00a0the rest of the room, thanks to sculpted partitions recalling the Moorish-inspired\u00a0chiseled plasters that offer a luminous brilliance, all within a soft glow and a\u00a0peaceful atmosphere.<\/p>\n
There is some duality, but there is also complementarity, relief, energy, tenderness\u2026the duality expresses itself somewhere between proliferation and\u00a0minimalism, between exuberance and reserve\u2026<\/p>\nSuite 305 at the EQUIPHOTEL Salon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Hicham Lahlou is a prolific international designer, considered among the leading\u00a0artistic forerunners in Morocco, Africa, and the Arab world. He has achieved\u00a0celebrity status for his reinterpretations of architectural symbols and the\u00a0development of figurative styles inspired by Moorish ornamental art as well as by\u00a0the cultural spirit of Berber, Africa, and Bauhaus.<\/p>\n
He has designed collections for prestigious international brands across furniture,\u00a0tableware, clockworks, luxury equipment, and product designs. He has also led\u00a0design projects in urban furniture for some of the largest cities in Morocco, in\u00a0addition to contributing to projects in residential interior design, commercial\u00a0architecture, and hotel architecture.<\/p>\n
Ranked among the top 15 innovators in Africa in August 2013 by the magazine\u00a0Afrique Business M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e and selected as Industrial Designer for two\u00a0consecutive years in 2011 and 2012 by the Canadian website EGO DESIGN, he\u00a0formally established in 2014 the Africa Design Award (www.africadesign.org).<\/p>\n
In March 2014, he designed the \u201cRestaurant of the Chefs\u201d (\u00ab\u00a0Resto des Chefs\u00a0\u00bb)\u00a0covering a surface area of 375 m2 at the Marocotel Salon held by EquipHotel\u00a0Paris.
